Newcastle United have reportedly lodged an enquiry with Serie A giants Juventus to explore the possibility of signing former Arsenal star Aaron Ramsey.

According to a report from Goal, Newcastle United’s pursuit of a new central midfielder has taken them to Italy as the Magpies have asked Serie A bigwigs Juventus about the availability of ex-Arsenal superstar Aaron Ramsey.

The Welshman spent the majority of his professional career in England with Arsenal before moving on to Juventus two years ago on a free transfer. However, the move to Turin has massively backfired for Ramsey, who has struggled with form and fitness in Italy, and as a result, has found himself struggling to establish a foothold in the starting XI.

With the Bianconeri in a bit of a difficult position financially, Ramsey has been touted as one player who could be offloaded due to his wages, even as Juve push to re-sign Miralem Pjanic from Barcelona. And, there seems to be no shortage of suitors for the former Arsenal midfielder in the Premier League.

Wolves had registered an interest in the Wales international, with Newcastle, too, now entering the fray for Ramsey’s signing. The Magpies are intent on bolstering their midfield unit ahead of the new season and are pushing to sign a current Arsenal player in the form of Joe Willock, who played a crucial role in their efforts to stave off relegation while on loan in the second half of the last season.

In addition, Newcastle had also been linked with a move for Chelsea youngster Conor Gallagher, who has instead chosen to sign for Crystal Palace on loan. With little progress being made on the Willock front, it seems like the Tynesiders are keeping their options open with Ramsey’s name also on the table for the moment.

The report adds that while Newcastle have asked Juventus about the Welshman, there is nothing concrete about the transfer talks at this point in time. While his experience and proven pedigree in the Premier League would be of great value, Ramsey’s wages and fitness issues could prove to be a deterring factor in Newcastle’s pursuit of the Wales international.

It remains to be seen if Steve Bruce & co. turn their informal enquiry for Ramsey into a more serious approach or decide to pursue other options. For now, the veteran midfielder is an option that Newcastle United are considering.
