Championship club Sheffield United are reportedly keen on landing Manchester United midfielder James Garner on loan this summer.

According to an exclusive report by The Sun, Sheffield United are interested in signing James Garner from Manchester United in the summer transfer window. The Championship club wish to sign the 20-year-old midfielder as a replacement for Sander Berge, albeit on a loan deal.

Sheffield United ended their two-year stay in the Premier League on a whimper this past season. After enjoying a memorable 2019/20 campaign, the Blades were expected to step up and become Premier League regulars, only to be struck by the dreaded “second season syndrome”, finishing rock-bottom in the top-flight.

Now back in the Championship, things have been slow for the South Yorkshire outfit, who have hardly made any signings this summer. However, Sheffield United have now set their sights on James Garner, with the Manchester United midfielder a viable target for them.

Garner joined the Manchester United academy in 2009 before subsequently rising through the ranks rapidly at the club. One of the most impressive performers at youth level for the Red Devils, the player broke into the first-team squad midway through the 2018/19 season, and he has since gone on to amass a total of seven appearances for the record English champions.

It is while he has been away from Manchester United that Garner has really made an impression, with his loan spells at Watford and Nottingham Forest last term helping him garner several fans. In those two loan stints, the 20-year-old raked in 41 outings, chipping in with four goals and an assist.

Speaking of the interest from Sheffield United again, and Garner is a viable target for the Blades, who are in a precarious position over the future of Sander Berge. The Norwegian midfielder has been linked with Arsenal once again of late, which is why they would need to bring in someone like the Manchester United.

The departure of the youngster will leave the Championship outfit light in midfield, especially in the wake of John Lundstram’s move to Rangers. What now remains to be seen is Sheffield United are able to convince Manchester United to send Garner on loan to Bramall Lane or if Nottingham Forest once again manage to land the young midfielder this summer.
