Real Madrid are reportedly considering a move for Jerome Boateng, who is a free agent after being released by German champions Bayern Munich.

According to a report from Spanish outlet Defensa Central, Real Madrid could make a move for yet another former Bayern Munich defender this summer after having already signed David Alaba, with Jerome Boateng now on the club’s radar.

The 32-year-old saw his ten-year association with Bayern Munich come to an end this summer after the record German champions decided not to renew his expiring contract. Boateng departed the Allianz Arena after having made over 350 appearances for the Bavarian giants during which he won a host of titles and trophies.

While there had been signs of age catching up with him last season, Boateng still remains a top-quality operator with loads of experience at the highest level. And, that is something that Real Madrid will be needing this summer, after having been dealt a major blow with regard to their defensive options.

Indeed, Real Madrid have lost former captain and club legend Sergio Ramos, after the veteran Spaniard saw his contract run out, following which he secured a free transfer to Paris Saint-Germain. Furthermore, the Merengues are also set to lose Raphael Varane, who is on the verge of completing a transfer to Premier League bigwigs Manchester United.

That leaves new manager Carlo Ancelotti with Eder Militao, Alaba and Nacho as frontline options at the heart of the defence, making it a necessity to recruit another centra defender. But with finances tight and multiple positions needing to be strengthened in the summer market, Real Madrid are forced to look at cost-effective options, which is why they are now looking at free agents.

Former Arsenal star David Luiz is among the names being considered by the Spanish capital club while ex-Napoli defender Nikola Maksimovic is another player that Ancelotti & co. are looking at. In addition to those two names, Real Madrid are also looking at Boateng to bolster their defensive options.

The 32-year-old German defender has recently been linked with a move to Real Madrid’s La Liga rivals Sevilla as a potential replacement for Jules Kounde. Whether the Merengues are able to swoop him away from under their noses remains to be seen.
