Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly lodged an offer worth €55 million for Cristian Romero, who is also a target for Barcelona this summer.

According to a report by Calciomercato, Tottenham Hotspur have stepped up their efforts to land Cristian Romero in the summer transfer window. The north Londoners have submitted an offer worth €55 million for the Argentine international, who is also being courted by Barcelona.

Cristian Romero has been nothing short of phenomenal since joining Juventus from Genoa in the summer of 2019. Curiously, though, the 23-year-old is yet to make a single appearance for the Bianconeri, having rejoined Genoa on loan for the 2019/20 season before being hauled off to Atalanta last summer.

It is at Atalanta that Romero has made a significant progress in his career, ending 2020/21 as the best defender in Serie A while also breaking into the Argentine national side. To date, Romero has made 42 appearances for La Dea, while chipping in with three goals and five assists. His progress has alerted a number of clubs, including Tottenham and Barcelona.

Tottenham have bid goodbye to Toby Alderweireld, who is beginning a Qatari adventure ahead of the 2021/22 season. The Belgian international’s departure has left a massive void in Spurs’ defensive unit, especially with Eric Dier and Davinson Sanchez proving to be inconsistent in recent times. With that in mind, the aggressive pursuit of Romero makes a lot of sense.

Tottenham, though, are not alone in pursuit of the 23-year-old, who is also a target for Barcelona. The interest from Blaugrana is understandable as well, seeing as Samuel Umtiti and Clement Lenglet could both be on their way out of Camp Nou this summer. So, even though they have signed Eric Garcia this summer, landing another central defender will make a world of difference.

However, Barcelona do not have the means to afford his €55 million valuation, which was also proving to be problematic initially for Tottenham, who were even forced to scour the transfer market for alternatives, with the likes of Takehiro Tomiyasu, Nikola Milenkovic and Kurt Zouma among those linked with the Lilywhites.

Tottenham, though, have now made their move for Romero, with the offer being submitted being the exact sum requested for his signature, with Spurs offering €55 million in exchange for his services. What now remains to be seen is if such a bid is enough for Tottenham to land Romero or if Barcelona can pull the rabbit out of a hat by signing the Argentine international instead.

If we lose this signing it’ll be Levys fault, instead of getting the deal for this top player done he drags his feet trying to drive down the price which has let others in to bid. Sort it Levy and get him in.

Totally agree. How much longer do we have to put up with this crap. If we lose this player im out
