Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly weighing up the possibility of signing 28-year-old Mexican utility man Jesus Corona, who has a €40 million exit clause.

According to Duncan Castles on the Transfer Window Podcast, as relayed by Record, Jesus Corona is the subject of interest from Tottenham Hotspur over a move in the summer transfer window. The Premier League heavyweights are considering the possibility of making a move for the 28-year-old Mexican international, who has a €40 million release clause in his FC Porto contract.

Jesus Corona joined FC Porto from FC Twente in the summer of 2015 and has since been a regular feature for the Portuguese giants. This summer, he is completing half a dozen years at Estadio do Dragao, and to date, he has notched up 269 appearances for the Dragons while chipping in with 31 goals and 68 assists in the process.

However, the Mexican international’s future with Porto is up in the air as things stand, with his current deal running out in a year’s time. With very little development on the renewal front, there is a sense that Corona could be on his way out of the club this summer, with the 28-year-old utility man already being linked with Arsenal and Chelsea while Tottenham Hotspur are his latest admirers.

Tottenham are currently in a period of transition following the appointment of Nuno Espirito Santo as their new manager. The said transition has raised question marks around the futures of Erik Lamela and Lucas Moura while Steven Bergwijn has often flattered to deceive since arriving from PSV Eindhoven.

Lamela’s time at Tottenham appears to be at an end, with Bryan Gil set to arrive in his stead as part of a part-exchange deal with Sevilla. However, if Moura ends up leaving, Spurs would need another winger, while they are yet to fill the void left by the departure of Gareth Bale at the end of his loan spell.

At the same time, Matt Doherty’s future is reportedly uncertain as well. And if Nuno deploys his oft used system from his time at Wolverhampton Wanderers, Corona could be a viable replacement for the Irishman as well. And as per Duncan Castles on The Transfer Window Podcast (h/t Record), Tottenham are considering making a move for the 28-year-old.

However, his €40 million could be a potential stumbling block for a club that has not spent a lot of money on signings in recent times. Having said that, it will be interesting to see if Spurs’ interest in Corona turns into something serious, thereby paving the way for a big summer move for the utility man.
