Real Madrid and Manchester United are reportedly just ‘hours away’ from reaching an agreement over the transfer of French defender Raphael Varane.

As per the latest update on the Raphael Varane transfer saga, Real Madrid and Manchester United are on the cusp of arriving at an agreement over a deal for the 28-year-old superstar, claims Madridista Real.

Varane has been with Real Madrid for a decade now and has cemented his status as one of the best defenders to play for the club during his successful ten-year stint, having won a host of titles and trophies, including four UEFA Champions Leagues. However, having entered the final year of his contract with Los Blancos, the 28-year-old has his heart set on an exit this summer.

Indeed, Varane is seeking a new challenge in his career, with long-term admirers Manchester United touted as his next destination. The Red Devils have been ardent suitors of the Frenchman before he signed for Real Madrid and may finally be close to getting their hands on the centre-back in the ongoing transfer window.

Manchester United are in need of another world-class centre-back to partner club captain Harry Maguire as they look to close the gap to the top of the table. Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly have not been consistent enough while also having had to battle injury issues, whereas Phil Jones is not part of manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s plans.

With Axel Tuanzebe also expected to depart on loan this summer, bringing in a new central defender becomes of paramount importance for the 20-time English champions. While a host of names had been linked over the weeks, Manchester United have narrowed in on Varane now and have been working on getting a deal over the line for quite some time now.

And, it now seems like their efforts are set to bear fruit, with an agreement between the two clubs said to be a matter of hours. Varane, for his part, is keen on making the switch to Old Trafford and wants to secure an exit from Real Madrid on a pleasant note rather than having to force a transfer away from the club.

It has already been claimed that personal terms should not be a problem, with Varane already agreeing a five-year deal with Manchester United. Now with the Red Devils closing in on an agreement with the Spanish capital outfit, the transfer seems pretty much imminent. If true, it will be yet another top piece of business this summer from United after having agreed a deal to sign Jadon Sancho as well.
