Manchester United have set their sights on Real Sociedad forward Alexander Isak as they look to bolster their options in the centre-forward department.

According to a report from Spanish publication Fichajes, Manchester United are looking to bring in a new centre-forward this summer and have identified Real Sociedad’s Swedish striker Alexander Isak as one of the potential targets.

Isak came through the youth ranks at AIK in his homeland before earning a high-profile transfer to Borussia Dortmund in 2017. However, having struggled to make a breakthrough in Germany, the 21-year-old signed for Real Sociedad in the summer of 2019 and has not looked back since, racking up 33 goals and five assists for the Spanish outfit in 89 games.

Isak was particularly impressive in the 2020/21 campaign, bagging 17 goals in 34 La Liga matches and followed it up with some solid showings at the UEFA Euro 2020. And, it seems like the young striker has done enough to register himself on the radars of one of the biggest clubs in the world in Manchester United.

The Red Devils have already made an attacking signing this summer, with Jadon Sancho set to join from Borussia Dortmund imminently. However, another centre-forward remains a necessary addition for manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and rightly so. While Edinson Cavani impressed during his debut season last time out, he is not getting any younger.

Mason Greenwood, meanwhile, is still learning the ropes and cannot be burdened with leading the line for Manchester United week in week out as of yet. And, with there being serious question marks over the future of Anthony Martial after yet another underwhelming season, signing a new striker would make a great deal of sense for the 20-time English champions.

The likes of Harry Kane and Erling Haaland have been mentioned as targets, but given the finances that could be involved in the deals, a move for either of the two looks a distant possibility this summer. Instead, Manchester United have now turned their focus towards the young and talented Isak, who fits the profile of players that the club have looked to recruit under Solskjaer.

Apart from the 21-year-old Swede, Manchester United are also said to be looking at Everton and England striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin, while Paris Saint-Germain’s Mauro Icardi is also under consideration, although the Argentine is not favoured much by the club hierarchy.

So, it now remains to be seen if Manchester United decide to act on their interest in Isak and attempt to sign him from Real Sociedad this summer or look at other options, as they look to topple Manchester City from their perch.

As a United fan, a new striker would be a good move, although with Cavani, Greenwood, Hugill and Martial (although you need to hope he is sold), you have to question the need for one this Summer.

Last season, United let in 44 goals, only 12 more than title winners Manchester City, and 6 of those were against Spurs at the start of the campaign. Imagine if United actually had a defensive midfielder, the likes of Declan Rice, Denis Zakaria, Yves Bissouma, Wilfred Ndidi.

A defensive midfielder would allow United to play a 4-3-3 system and thus Paul Pogba could play more of an attacking game with Bruno Fernandes, instead of playing him out of position on the left wing and benching Marcus Rashford.

Henderson (De Gea), Wan-Bissaka (Trippier / Dalot), Varane (Bailly / Tuanzebe), Maguire (Lindelof), Shaw (Telles), DEFENSIVE MIDFIELDER (Fred), Fernandes (McTominay), Pogba (Van de Beek), Sancho (Amad), Cavani (Greenwood), Rashford (James).

Sell / Release – Jones, Andreas Pereira, Lingard, Martial, Matic AND POSSIBLY Dalot, Bailly
