West Ham United have reportedly turned their attention towards 24-year-old Uruguayan forward Maxi Gomez over a possible move this summer.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, West Ham United’s search for an attacking addition to their squad has taken them to La Liga. Maxi Gomez is now the subject of interest from the Hammers over a move in the summer transfer window, with the 24-year-old likely to leave Valencia.

Maxi Gomez is one of several South American players to have arrived in La Liga’s safe haven in the last half a decade, having first joined Celta Vigo in the summer of 2017. And two years later, the Uruguayan forward made his way to Valencia, in the hopes of taking his career to new heights.

The move, though, has not panned out as envisioned for either the club or the player, who has only managed a paltry return of 17 goals and nine goals in 74 appearances across all competitions. However, that has not done anything to deter potential suitors, with West Ham United, in particular, keen on signing him.

The interest from West Ham is hardly surprising, seeing as Michail Antonio is the only reliable striker at the disposal of David Moyes following the departure of Sebastien Haller. Antonio, meanwhile, is on the wrong side of 30 and struggled with a few injuries in the season gone by.

Therefore, it is imperative that West Ham sign a striker to take some burden off of the experienced forward. To that end, Chelsea outcast Tammy Abraham is believed to be high on the Hammers’ agenda, although as per recent reports, they are struggling to raise the necessary funds to swoop him away from Stamford Bridge.

As a result, West Ham have had to turn their attention elsewhere in search of an attacking reinforcement, with Breel Embolo recently emerging on their radar. And the latest forward to be linked with the East London club is Gomez, who could well be on his way out of Valencia as they look to balance their books.

What now remains to be seen is if West Ham can succeed in their pursuit of the 24-year-old Uruguayan forward or if they are forced to set their sights on someone else. For now, Gomez has popped up on the Hammers’ radar, although he could well be another Andriy Yarmolenko in the making.
