Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly one step closer to signing Takehiro Tomiyasu, having agreed personal terms with the 22-year-old defender.

According to an exclusive report by Football Insider, Tottenham Hotspur are inching closer to securing the services of Takehiro Tomiyasu. The Premier League heavyweights have reached an agreement over personal terms with the 22-year-old Japanese defender and are now looking to reach a consensus on his transfer fee with Bologna.

Takehiro Tomiyasu joined Bologna from Sint-Truiden in the summer of 2019 and has progressed a great deal in the last couple of seasons. To date, the 22-year-old has turned out 63 times for the Serie A club while chipping in with three goals and as many assists.

The Japanese defender has also impressed a great deal with his ability to play as a right-back in addition to reprising his primary role of a centre-back. All in all, Tomiyasu appears to be one of the hidden gems of Serie A, one that has now been unearthed by Premier League giants Tottenham Hotspur.

Tottenham are in a period of transition, which is set to begin following the appointment of Nuno Espirito Santo as their new manager. And defence appears to be one of the departments that are set to be bolstered by the new Spurs boss, amid claims that Toby Alderweireld wishes to call it quits at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

With Eric Dier and Davinson Sanchez blowing hot and cold all through their stints with the north Londoners, and Japhet Tanganga struggling with a few injuries, it is hardly surprising that a centre-back has emerged as a priority reinforcement for the club. To that end, Tomiyasu is a player who has popped up on the radar of Tottenham this summer.

In fact, it has even been suggested that Spurs have tabled an offer for the 22-year-old. And now, even more progress has been made in pursuit of the Japanese defender, with Tottenham agreeing personal terms over a long-term contract with him.

All that now appears to be remaining for the English giants to secure the services of Tomiyasu is reaching an agreement with Bologna over a transfer fee. As things stand, Tottenham have offered £15.5 million, including add-ons, but the Serie A outfit are holding out for £17.2 million.

It will now be interesting to see if Tottenham can bridge the gap on their valuation, having already taken the first step of agreeing personal terms with the player himself. A key period beckons in the coming weeks.
