Liverpool are reportedly interested in signing 23-year-old English international Harvey Barnes from Leicester City this summer.
According to a report by Goal, Harvey Barnes is the subject of interest from Liverpool over a move in the summer transfer window. The 23-year-old has plenty of admirers at Anfield, with the Reds keen on bolstering their attack this summer in order to bridge the gap to Manchester City.
Harvey Barnes joined Leicester City as a nine-year-old in 2007 before making swift progress in the youth setup at the club. The English winger broke into the Foxes’ first-team squad in 2016, but it was not until the 2019/20 season that he finally enjoyed a breakthrough at the King Power Stadium under the tutelage of Brendan Rodger.
2020/21 was proving to be another fine campaign for the 23-year-old, who also broke through in the English national side in 2020 before a serious injury derailed his season. Nevertheless, he still impressed with a return of 12 goals and four assists in 35 appearances across all competitions, with his progress seemingly capturing the attention of Liverpool.
Liverpool are believed to be in the market for an attacking reinforcement this summer, amid suggestions that Divock Origi and Xherdan Shaqiri are set to be offloaded ahead of the 2021/22 season. With Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino struggling for much of the last term, it is a prudent move to add some quality competition for the duo, as well as Diogo Jota.
To that end, Liverpool have recently been linked with Kingsley Coman but are likely to be priced out of a possible deal due to his €100 million valuation. Therefore, Barnes is surely a viable target for the Merseyside outfit, although the report adds that his price tag, too, could prove to be prohibitive for Liverpool.
Meanwhile, the report adds that Liverpool are also interested in Ollie Watkins, who could come in as a backup striker. As for Barnes, it will be interesting to see if Liverpool look to drive his price down by entering into negotiations with Leicester City for the 23-year-old. For now, the English international has popped up on the Reds’ radar ahead of a busy summer.
