Chelsea are reportedly in discussions with Borussia Dortmund over the transfer of Erling Haaland as things are predicted to advance in the coming days.

According to journalist Ekrum Konur, Chelsea are in talks with Borussia Dortmund for the signing of goal machine Erling Haaland with Blues’ owner Roman Abramovich also involved in negotiations as he hopes to convince the Germans to part ways with the striker.

Chelsea are in the market for a striker and have narrowed in on Haaland, currently one of Europe’s hottest prospects. The Blues have been searching for a top-class striker to improve the quality of their attack on the back of their triumphant Champions League campaign. Thomas Tuchel’s men beat Manchester City at Wembley back in May and want to upgrade their striking options.

The West London club splashed big last summer to refresh their forward line with big-money moves for Timo Werner, Kai Havertz and Hakim Ziyech. Now they want Erling Haaland, who could make them title contenders next season as they look to challenge Manchester City domestically.

Dortmund have reportedly placed a price tag close to €150 million on Haaland. The striker will be available for half that price in 2022, owing to a release clause in his contract, which activates next summer. There could be a queue of clubs vying for his signature then. In order to avoid that situation, Chelsea want to acquire him now by paying a premium.

There is also the involvement of Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich who is reportedly keen on convincing the Dortmund officials to sell their prized asset before next season. It is also understood that Haaland is interested in a move to Stamford Bridge and with Konur claiming recently that the Norwegian had responded positively to the personal terms and contract proposal made by the Blues.

Chelsea might be forced to pay a much higher transfer fee for the Norwegian in such a scenario. Dortmund would certainly hope they get the best value for Haaland, in case they do decide to change their current stance on the striker, which they could reinvest some of the money into their squad to replace him and teammate Jadon Sancho who is close to joining Manchester United.

Chelsea are one of maybe three or four clubs who could currently afford to buy Haaland. The rest are reeling from the effects of the pandemic on their finances. If the Blues offered a valuable deal, Dortmund might take it and earn more than what they could next summer. Alternatively, Dortmund could be content with his release clause and keep him for another year to challenge for the Bundesliga title.
