Arsenal are still interested in Manuel Locatelli and have asked about his availability to Sassuolo in recent days, although the midfielder is likely to remain in Italy.

According to The Athletic, Arsenal have enquired about Manuel Locatelli, although the Premier League giants have made no official offer. The Italian midfielder had emerged on Arsenal’s radar early in the window but now may remain within Serie A, with Juventus circling.

Arsenal’s search for a potential replacement for Granit Xhaka has created links with various targets across Europe. Manuel Locatelli has been one of the names mentioned since the Euros began. The 23-year-old midfielder performed well for Sassuolo last season, grabbing four goals and three assists.

While Locatelli remains a viable target, Mikel Arteta seemingly prefers someone with ample experience in the Premier League. However, Locatelli’s overall quality would still make him an option if the Gunners are serious about their interest.

Granit Xhaka’s influence on the team makes replacing him a difficult task. The Switzerland captain has two years left on his deal but has been strongly linked with a move to AS Roma after his campaign at UEFA Euro 2020 ends. Arsenal and Roma are yet to agree on a fee, but it is understood that personal terms are already in place as a precursor to the move.

Ruben Neves’ name was trending a few weeks ago, but the trail seems to have gone cold of late. Arsenal remain on the Portuguese midfielder’s trial, but things could go sideways if Wolves demand a higher asking price. The North Londoners are also closing in on Albert Sambi Lokonga from Anderlecht.

Back to Locatelli, the Italian international has garnered substantial interest from clubs across Europe. Juventus are thought to be the front-runners for his signature. As it is common for top Italian stars, they seemingly prefer to ply their trade in Serie A while rarely moving to other leagues.

A similar fate is expected in the Locatelli situation. The 23-year-old Sassuolo midfielder, who began his career at AC Milan, would reportedly prefer to stay in Italy, and Juventus are an attractive prospect. The Bianconeri are looking at midfield options to replace Aaron Ramsey, who is expected to leave imminently.

As for Arsenal, they could re-kindle interest in other targets and find their player most suited to replace Xhaka. There is plenty of time left in the transfer window, but Arsenal hope to wrap their business before the Premier League season begins.
