Manchester United have identified Leicester City star Caglar Soyuncu as the ideal option if they miss out on the pursuit of Raphael Varane.

According to Italian football journalist Rudy Galetti, Manchester United are considering Caglar Soyuncu as a fallback option, should they miss out on their pursuit of top target Raphael Varane. The Leicester City defender is one of the best in the Premier League but is expected to cost around €50 million.

However, it does make him a far more cost-effective option than Varane, with Real Madrid slapping an exorbitant €90 million price tag on their prized defensive asset.

Man United are only willing to fork out a fee of around €65 million, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer determined to bolster his defensive options this summer. The player himself is keen on a switch to Old Trafford, but the fee might be too much, especially with United already paying a fortune for Jadon Sancho this summer.

As such, the Red Devils have now set their sights on Caglar Soyuncu. They were one of the first clubs to seek the services of the Leicester City defender, who has enjoyed unprecedented success under the leadership of Brendan Rodgers.

Indeed, the 25-year-old has notched up 82 competitive appearances for the Foxes, helping the club qualify for European football for two consecutive seasons. The defender has also notched up 38 caps for the Turkish national team, although he was far from impressive in the ongoing European Championship.

That hasn’t deterred Manchester United, who are now keen on adding more quality in their defensive unit. Solskjaer is looking for an upgrade over Victor Lindelof – someone who can accompany Harry Maguire at the heart of the four-man backline.

Eric Bailly is not a viable option, having seen his Manchester United career marred by injuries, while Axel Tuanzebe might be set for a loan move away from Old Trafford. It paves the way ideally for Soyuncu to become a key player for the Red Devils next season. He can use his experience in the Premier League to settle in quickly, becoming a defensive lynchpin for his new club.

The Turkish international is not the only defender in the books of Manchester United, though. In fact, the Premier League are also on the hunt for Real Madrid icon Sergio Ramos after the Spaniard announced his exit from Los Blancos.
