Erling Haaland’s future at a big club was written in stone when he started setting the Austrian Bundesliga on fire with RB Salzburg. Dortmund could count themselves fortunate to have snapped him at a modest fee, and the striker has taken his chance at the Signal Iduna Park while proving himself to be every bit the goal machine everyone thought he will be.
Dortmund are ready to make a considerable profit from his sale and encouraging bidders to come forward this summer. Haaland’s contract consists of a release clause that will be active next summer, worth around £68 million. There will be more clubs queuing up for his signature for that price, resulting in a bidding war.
A handful of clubs registering their interest and are ready to pay a premium price for the Norwegian this summer rather than wait until the next one. These select clubs are thought to be Manchester City, Real Madrid, Manchester United and Chelsea.
However, it is Chelsea who have managed to get ahead in the queue and are hopeful of completing this mega transfer. The London club are looking to build on their Champions League success from last season and go one better in the Premier League this upcoming season.
The reported price quoted for Haaland this summer is around €150 million. While the Blues have the financial firepower to complete such an audacious deal, they will look to negotiate the price down and are preparing to offer €85 million plus Tammy Abraham to land the Dortmund star. Haaland, meanwhile, is also thought to be open to joining Chelsea.
Chelsea owner Roman Abramovic is reportedly looking into this transfer personally and wants to make a statement signing this summer. Chelsea were also looking at Achraf Hakimi, but the Inter Milan full-back now seems poised to join PSG instead.
However, Haaland’s signing will be considered a significant sign of Chelsea’s challenge for the Premier League title. It will also boost Chelsea’s hopes to become the first English team ever to retain the Champions League crown, and for that, signings like Haaland are necessary. Having said that, it remains to be seen if the €85 million plus Tammy Abraham offer is good enough to land him.
