Barcelona have been handed a major boost in pursuit of Alejandro Grimaldo, who is eager to return to Camp Nou this summer.

According to a report by Spanish outlet El Gol Digital, Barcelona have a distinct advantage over rivals Atletico Madrid in the race to sign Alejandro Grimaldo in the summer transfer window. The 25-year-old wants a return to Camp Nou amid heavy links with two of the biggest clubs in La Liga.

Alejandro Grimaldo has blossomed into one of the most enterprising full-backs in Europe since joining Benfica from Barcelona in 2015. A product of Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy, the 25-year-old has gone from strength to strength during his stint with the Portuguese giants, producing a tally of 13 goals and 41 assists in 201 appearances.

However, his progress has piqued the interest of several marquee clubs across Europe over the years and heading into this summer’s transfer window, the interest in his ramped up considerably. Presently, Barcelona are keen on re-signing their former left-back, with Atletico Madrid hot on his trails as well.

Barcelona’s interest in Grimaldo makes a lot of sense, considering Jordi Alba is not getting any younger and will need to start getting phased out in due course. The Spanish international has, in addition, been linked with a shock move to Atletico Madrid as well, and such a scenario would force the Blaugrana to search for a first-choice left-back anyway.

To that end, Jose Gaya is one of the left-backs on the radar of Barcelona, who are also scouring the market for an alternative, seeing as Valencia might hold firm on their captain. Therefore, Grimaldo is a viable target for the Catalan giants, with the player unlikely to take long to get settled in the environs of Camp Nou either.

Barcelona have now been given a shot in the arm in pursuit of the 25-year-old, who wants to return to the club this summer, meaning Atletico Madrid will be facing an uphill battle in his pursuit. Having said that, a price tag has not been mentioned, so it is unclear whether Barcelona will be able to afford Grimaldo.

For now, though, Barcelona have been handed a major boost in pursuit of Alex Grimaldo, and it will be interesting to see if a big return is on the cards in the summer transfer window for the Benfica left-back.
