Barcelona have reportedly established contact with 27-year-old German international Matthias Ginter over a move this summer.

According to a report by Sky Germany, Barcelona are preparing themselves to make a move for Matthias Ginter in the summer transfer window. The Blaugrana have approached the 27-year-old German international, with Borussia Monchengladbach open to the prospect of cashing in on him.

Mathias Ginter has been one of the most consistent defenders in the Bundesliga over the past half a decade, if not longer. The 27-year-old has been with Borussia Monchengladbach since the summer of 2017 and has gone on to turn out 148 times for the Foals, even chipping in with 10 goals and five assists.

During this period, he has also established himself as a regular for the German national side and has featured prominently for them at UEFA Euro 2020 so far. However, Ginter’s future at the club level has a lot of question marks surrounding it, especially with his deal running out in a little over a year. Such a situation seems to have piqued the interest of Barcelona.

Barcelona have already signed one centre-back this summer in Eric Garcia but are believed to be keen on signing a second central defender as well. That is because while Garcia has arrived at Camp Nou as a potential long-term successor for Gerard Pique, the non-existent future of Samuel Umtiti is prompting them to find a replacement.

Indeed, the Catalan giants are reportedly ready to offload the Frenchman and are now scouring for a replacement. To that end, Barcelona have been linked with several centre-backs in recent weeks, with Ginter emerging as the latest option. And now, Barcelona have taken the first step to secure the services of the 27-year-old, having made an approach to the German international.

What keeps Barcelona in good stead when it comes to the pursuit of Ginter is the fact that his deal expires next summer, and talks over a renewal have been put on hold. As per Sky Germany, the Blaugrana have had him in their sights much ahead of the start of Germany’s UEFA Euro 2020 campaign.

The duration of his contract might also make Ginter a potential low-cost option for Barcelona to consider, especially with Borussia Monchengladbach open to the prospect of parting ways with him this summer. What now remains to be seen is if Barcelona step up their interest in Ginter further by launching the offensive for him soon.
