Manchester United have reportedly lodged an offer worth £50 million for Raphael Varane, but Real Madrid want £80 million for him.

According to a report by Manchester Evening News, Manchester United have made their first official offer for Raphael Varane. The Premier League heavyweights have tabled a bid worth £50 million for the French defender, but Real Madrid want £80 million to part ways with him.

Varane has enjoyed a memorable decade-long spell at Real Madrid since arriving from RC Lens in the summer of 2011. Winning every possible trophy at club level with Los Blancos, the Frenchman has been especially key in the last half a decade or so, raking in 360 appearances for Los Blancos, and chipping in with 17 goals and 7 assists.

However, heading into the summer transfer window, Varane’s future at Real Madrid is as uncertain as it has ever been, with widespread reports suggesting that he is keen on embarking on a fresh adventure. Such a situation has piqued the interest of Manchester United, who are willing to offer him a lucrative contract.

Manchester United are in the market for a centre-back this summer as they desperately search for a reliable long-term partner for Harry Maguire, with Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly blowing hot and cold while also dealing with their respective fitness issues. To that end, Varane is just the kind of defender to elevate the Red Devils’ defensive unit to the next level.

The Premier League heavyweights, as iterated, are also prepared to offer him appealing terms to swoop him away from Real Madrid. However, as per recent reports, PSG could well have the edge over Manchester United, with Varane leaning towards the French giants over United.

Manchester United, though, have made their first offer for the 28-year-old, tabling a £50 million bid to land the 2018 FIFA World Cup winner. However, the offer falls well short of Real Madrid’s valuation, with the Merengues looking to recoup £80 million in exchange for his services.

Manchester United, though, are unwilling to meet the £80 million valuation and are in discussions with Real Madrid to reach a compromise over a transfer fee. What now remains to be seen is if Manchester United can reach an agreement with Real Madrid over an acceptable fee and make Varane the second key defender to leave the Spanish giants after Sergio Ramos.
