Barcelona have reportedly been offered the chance to sign Donny van de Beek from Manchester United in the summer transfer window.

According to a report by Spanish publication SPORT, Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek has offered himself to Barcelona through his agents. The Blaugrana are in the market for a midfielder in the summer transfer window and are currently scouring for alternatives for Georginio Wijnaldum.

Donny van de Beek joined Manchester United from Ajax last summer in what was the marquee transfer for the club. However, the move has not panned out as envisioned one bit for the Dutch midfielder, who has had to play second fiddle to Manchester United talisman Bruno Fernandes so far.

While he turned out 36 times in all competitions for the Red Devils, only 15 of his outings were from the get-go, which is quite a paltry number considering the club played 61 games this past season. A decline in stature at club level has also pushed him down the pecking order in the Dutch national side. His frustrations seem to have boiled over now, with the 24-year-old offering himself to Barcelona.

The Catalan giants are in the market for a midfielder this summer, as Philippe Coutinho is surplus to requirements while Riqui Puig and Carles Alena have not been a big part of Ronald Koeman’s plans. Ilaix Moriba’s breakthrough has eased the requirement of a midfielder to some extent, but with Miralem Pjanic keen on returning to Italy, it is a prudent move for Barcelona to bolster their midfield department.

To that end, Georginio Wijnaldum was believed to be Barcelona’s priority target for the summer for the better part of the past year only for PSG to swoop him away in the eleventh hour. Therefore, the Blaugrana have had to scour the transfer market for an alternative in recent weeks, with Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek now presenting himself as one.

The Dutch midfielder’s agents have already offered Barcelona the chance to sign him, as he looks to leave Manchester United this summer to get his career back on track. Barcelona are yet to formally respond to the offer, but are expected to decline it, as they search for other options in the market.

Nicolo Barella has been identified as one of the alternatives for Wijnaldum, with a few others being linked as well. One thing that appears to be certain, though, is that Barcelona will not sign his compatriot van de Beek from Manchester United this summer, with the Dutchman now having to look for other destinations where he can resurrect his career.
