Barcelona are reportedly weighing up a summer swoop for Manchester City forward Raheem Sterling amid Ousmane Dembele’s uncertain future at Camp Nou.

According to a report from Catalan publication SPORT, Barcelona are considering making a move for Manchester City’s English attacker Raheem Sterling in the upcoming transfer window.

Sterling has established himself as one of the most dangerous forwards in the Premier League since making the jump to Manchester City from boyhood club Liverpool in the summer of 2015. To date, the 26-year-old has amassed 292 appearances for the Cityzens, bagging a total of 114 goals and 87 assists, in the process winning several titles and trophies.

Even though he has been an integral part of the success that Manchester City have achieved under Pep Guardiola, Sterling was overlooked by the manager in several important games towards the end of the 2020/21 campaign, casting doubts on his future at the Etihad Stadium. Arsenal are said to have emerged as a suitor for the Englishman, with Barcelona also now entering the fray.

Barcelona had a mixed 2020/21 season under new manager Ronald Koeman, following which they are undergoing quite the revamp. Indeed, the Catalan giants have already brought in three new players in Sergio Aguero, Eric Garcia and Emerson Royal. Still, the transfer activity is far from done at Camp Nou.

Barcelona are seeking more reinforcements in the attacking third, which is understandable considering that Francisco Trincao does not have a future at Camp Nou while Antoine Griezmann has not always looked at his best while playing out on the flanks. The biggest reason for the Blaugrana to be considering splashing the cash on a new wide player is the uncertainty surrounding Ousmane Dembele.

The Frenchman is entering the final year of his contract with Barcelona, and the club intends to offer him an extension. However, with the ex-Borussia Dortmund star showing no urgency in penning a new deal, the Blaugrana have decided to cash in on him this summer and bring in a different wide player, leading to the interest in Sterling, who has also been linked with arch-rivals Real Madrid.

However, Barcelona are well aware that any move for the 26-year-old England international, contracted with Manchester City till 2023, will cost them big bucks and may need them to offer players as a makeweight to secure a deal. The Catalans are already mulling over a similar kind of deal to sign another Cityzens’ star Aymeric Laporte, and it now remains to be seen if they act on their reported interest in Sterling as well this summer.
