Manchester United are reportedly willing to table an offer worth £39 million to sign 23-year-old Argentine defender Cristian Romero.

As reported by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Manchester United are stepping up their efforts to secure the services of Cristian Romero in the summer transfer window. The Premier League heavyweights are ready to offer £39 million to swoop the 23-year-old Argentine international away from Serie A.

Romero has established himself as one of the best defenders in Serie A since joining Atalanta on loan from Juventus last summer. Signed on a two-year loan deal, the player went on to feature 42 times in all competitions for La Dea, even chipping in with 3 goals and 5 assists.

Such was the impression he made that Atalanta are now set to sign Romero on a permanent deal this summer. However, the 23-year-old is unlikely to stick around for long in Bergamo, seeing as Manchester United are hot on his trails and are now stepping up even more to land him.

Manchester United appear set to bolster the heart of their defence this summer to find a long-term partner for Harry Maguire, and for good reason. Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly have only managed to impress in bit and parts, with the duo also being troubled by fitness issues in 2020/21 – and way before then in Bailly’s case.

In addition, Axel Tuanzebe has also had his fair share of obstacles in his bid to establish a foothold in the Manchester United first-team setup. Therefore, it is imperative that the Red Devils sign a reliable central defender who can shore things up at the back and weed out the unforced errors that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer & co. have been susceptible to.

To that end, Manchester United have been linked with several centre-backs including Raphael Varane, Jules Kounde and Pau Torres, with Romero a viable target as well. That he is 23 means that his best years ought to be well ahead of him, making him an even more appealing target for United.

Manchester United are now ready to launch the offensive for him, with a £39 million bid in the works to tempt Atalanta to cash in on him. The report does suggest that the Serie A giants could consider selling at such an amount and it will be interesting to see if Manchester United do table an offer worth £39 million, once Romero is officially an Atalanta player for good.
