Chelsea are among clubs keeping an eye on Saul Niguez’s situation at Atletico Madrid, with the midfielder tipped to leave Wanda Metropolitano in the summer.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has offered an update on the future of Saul Niguez. It appears there is a possibility that the Atletico Madrid midfielder will leave the club in the summer, amid interest from FC Bayern Munich. The Bundesliga champions, though, are yet to submit an official bid.

Chelsea are another clubs keeping close tabs on Saul’s situation as it is well-known that Thomas Tuchel is determined to upgrade his ranks in midfielder after being given the license to spend, in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Saul’s future has been a subject of a lot of interest, as the Spaniard has endured a slight dip, in regards to his importance at Atleti. The meteoric rise of Marcos Llorente has had an impact on his role at the club, and it appears the recently crowned Spanish are not averse to cashing in on him, as means of transfer revenue in the current financial climate.

The midfielder has already been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United and FC Barcelona, which is surprising given his stellar career so far.

At the age of just 26, the former La Fabrica youth player has notched up 337 competitive appearances for Atletico Madrid, securing two UEFA Europa League titles, one Laliga and one Copa Del Rey, as well as winning 19 caps with La Roja.

Saul’s experience, combined with his aggression and winning mentality are highly sought-after in the world of football. What makes him such an appealing target for Tuchel, however, is his versatility, as the midfielder can operate almost anywhere across the middle and final third of the pitch.

Under the leadership of Diego Simeone, Saul has perfected the art of becoming a utility player. In fact, he makes a strong case for being the best utility player in the world of football at the moment.

This is primarily why Chelsea are targeting the Spanish international, as they not only need reinforcements in midfield but also in the wide areas. The Blues are already expected to lose a few players in the summer, including Callum Hudson-Odoi, who has become a target for Germain giants Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich.

The addition of Saul, in that regard, should serve as a massive boost for Tuchel. It is, however, fair to point out that the Atletico Madrid superstar may cost a fortune, potentially disrupting the club’s pursuit of other top players including Harry Kane.

At the end of the day, a lot will depend on how Los Colchoneros choose to go about their business, as far as maintaining the harmony of their squad is concerned, especially after a successful campaign in Laliga.
