Liverpool have beaten Sporting CP in the race to secure the services of Abdul Fatawu Issahaku, who will be sent on loan to Portugal.

According to reliable African footballing journalist Saddick Adams, Liverpool have won the race to sign Abdul Fatawu Issahaku this summer. It appears they have beaten Sporting CP in the pursuit of the young midfielder, who currently plies his trade for local Ghanaian outfit Steadfast FC.

The Reds, though, are expected to immediately loan Fatawu away from Anfield, to Sporting CP, despite having beaten the newly-crowned Portuguese champions in the transfer duel. They view the forward as one for the future, which is they believe some direct experience of European football should do the player good.

Sporting CP, though, were not the only club interested in Fatawu as the Ghanaian number ten was eyed by a number of top clubs across Europe, including Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen.

It wasn’t surprising though, as the player had made massive strives in his native footballing scene in Ghana. After primarily plying his trade with the Ghanaian U17 team earlier this year, the youngster was fast-tracked into the senior national team during the African Cup of Nations qualifiers, though he is yet to make his debut for his country.

That is only a matter of time, though, as Fatawu is included in the Ghana squad that faces Morocco and Ivory Coast in June. As for Liverpool, the 17-year-old could become the club’s second signing for next season, after the Reds announced the arrival of the highly-rated defensive gem in Ibrahima Konate.

There is no secret that Jurgen Klopp’s men are in for a busy transfer window after a disappointing title defence in 2020/21. They are primarily targeting the defensive unit, but the creative department is also an issue as the team is often too over-reliant on the services of Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah.

There are holes to be filled in midfield, too, following the departure of Georginio Wijnaldum while Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain is also facing an uncertain future at the club.

Although Fatawu is not an answer to either of these problems for Liverpool next season, he is indeed an exciting new addition to this team and it will be interesting to see how the youngster continues his development in Sporting next season.
