Atletico Madrid are reportedly interested in signing Gareth Bale, who is currently on loan at Tottenham, from Real Madrid this summer.

According to a report by Spanish outlet El Gol Digital, Gareth Bale is the subject of interest from Atletico Madrid over a shock move in the summer transfer window. The Welsh international is set to return to Real Madrid ahead of the 2021/22 season following his loan spell with Tottenham this term.

Gareth Bale has endured a roller-coaster of a ride over the course of his stint with Real Madrid, having contributed some memorable moments during the eight-year spell but also having been embroiled in some contentious moments. The 31-year-old has especially been in the doldrums at the club since the return of Zinedine Zidane, with things reaching a head in 2019/20.

As a result, last summer, there was a lot of speculation over Bale’s future before he eventually made a return to Tottenham Hotspur, albeit on a season-long loan spell. Back in the Premier League, the Welsh forward has been inconsistent and has not featured week in week out. The Real Madrid loanee, though, has still managed a respectable return of 16 goals and 3 assists in all competitions.

Heading into this summer’s transfer window, however, Bale’s situation is once again up in the air. While Tottenham are reportedly eager to bring him back for good, there have been suggestions that Bale could end up staying put at Real Madrid as well. Now, though, a bizarre option has emerged for the 31-year-old, with Atletico Madrid interested in him.

The newly-crowned La Liga champions are hoping to repeat the trick of last season, which saw them land Luis Suarez from Barcelona in a shock deal, with the Uruguayan international inspiring them to the league title triumph this season. Atletico Madrid, though, remain in the market for an attacking addition due to the uncertain future of Joao Felix.

To that end, Los Rojiblancos have been linked with a move for Lautaro Martinez, who is also a target for Real Madrid. Bale, too, is a viable target for Atletico Madrid, if his loan spell with Spurs is anything to go by. While he has not been a regular for Tottenham, he has shown that he still has bundles of goals in him.

Having said that, it will be interesting to see if Real Madrid will be willing to do business with rivals Atletico Madrid this summer, or if Tottenham stand a chance to re-sign him. An intriguing summer beckons for Bale.
