Arsenal have received a boost in their pursuit of Sander Berge, as the Sheffield United midfielder is reportedly keen on joining the Gunners this summer.

According to Football.London, Sheffield United could be on the verge of losing Sander Berge, with the midfielder ready to join Arsenal. Although Everton and Aston Villa are determined to secure the services of Berge this summer, it appears the player is particularly open to the idea of moving to the Emirates.

Arsenal’s pursuit of Norwegian, though, could depend on one crucial factor and that is the future of Martin Odegaard. It is believed that Berge is close friends with the on-loan Real Madrid playmaker, which is a major reason behind his desire to switch to north London this summer.

Odegaard himself is reportedly a top target for Arsenal this summer, although the Gunners do fear Real Madrid’s valuation. As for Berge, he could apparently cost somewhere in the region of £35 million, even though Sheffield United have been relegated to the Championship this season.

It is hardly surprising either, as the 23-year-old has emerged as one of the bright sparks in an otherwise dire campaign for the Blades, impressing with his deep-lying playmaking qualities that could be useful once Dani Ceballos returns to Real Madrid, following the end of his loan spell with Arsenal.

Speaking of departures, Arsenal are expected to part ways with the majority of their current midfield options out on loan, including Matteo Guendouzi, Lucas Torreira and Ainsley Maitland-Niles. Even Thomas Partey has reportedly emerged as a potential target for Inter Milan this summer, although the move is very unlikely.

Mikel Arteta, therefore, is in desperate need of reinforcements in the middle of the park. One of the top targets for the north London giants is Rennes whizkid Edouardo Camavinga, but the Frenchman is an extremely unrealistic option, especially if Arsenal fail to secure European football next season.

In Berge, Arteta could find himself a cost-effective option. But, perhaps most importantly, the fact that Norwegian international has experience of Premier League football that should see him settle in rather quickly at the Emirates.

The 25-year-old’s style of play also fits in well with Arteta’s tactical philosophy, and the midfielder could particularly thrive alongside Odegaard, whose future at Arsenal still hangs in the balance, as Real Madrid prepare themselves for a potential squad overhaul in the upcoming summer transfer window.
