Atletico Madrid have reportedly emerged as a shock destination for David de Gea, who is set to leave Manchester United in the summer.

A recent report from Fichajes has shed some light on the future of David de Gea. It appears the Manchester United goalkeeper is finally set to depart Old Trafford in the summer and one of his potential destinations could be a return to Atletico Madrid, even though the likes of Juventus and Inter Milan have also courted the custodian.

A native of Madrid, de Gea had initially began his career in the Atletico Madrid youth academy. After his making a professional breakthrough during the 2009/10 campaign and a bigger one, in the following season, the Spaniard managed to seal a €25 million move to Manchester United, in the summer of 2011.

Brought in as a replacement for the legendary Edwin van der Sar, de Gea has enjoyed immense success since his move to England. He has made 437 competitive appearances for the Red Devils, winning one Premier League title, one FA Cup and one Europa League while emerging as one of the world’s best goalkeepers for some time.

The 30-year-old, though, has had a steady decline in his performances over the past couple of years. And, in the ongoing campaign, the Manchester United goalkeeper has been criticised for a lack of consistency, which has put enormous pressure on him, especially with Dean Henderson growing in stature, although his performance against AS Roma this week made quite a statement.

Further, de Gea himself has shown the desire to move leave Manchester United to return to his native Spain, to remain closer with his family in Madrid. A return to Atletico Madrid, in that regard, makes ideal sense, although it may suggest a potential departure for Atleti’s very own goalkeeper in Jan Oblak.

Often regarded as one of the world’s top three goalkeepers, Oblak has been linked with an exit from Wanda Metropolitano for quite some time now. He has even been subjected to interest from Manchester United, though it appears the Red Devils are far keener on securing a more cost-effective replacement for de Gea.

Time for a parting of ways? – The curious case of David de Gea and Manchester United

One of the goalkeepers tipped to join the Manchester United camp next season is Sam Johnstone, who is expected to provide direct competition for Henderson next season. It could be a smart choice by the Red Devils, especially knowing the fact that the departure of de Gea could significantly help them balance the books amid a challenging financial climate.
