Real Madrid ace Lucas Vazquez, who is out of contract at the end of the season, has turned down a proposal from local rivals Atletico Madrid over a summer move.

According to a report from Spanish publication AS, soon-to-be out of contract Real Madrid winger Lucas Vazquez has rejected a chance to make the jump to cross-town rivals Atletico Madrid in the upcoming transfer window.

Vazquez, a product of the Real Madrid youth academy, has been a regular fixture in the first-team squad since 2015 following a season away at Espanyol. While he may not be the biggest name in the side, the 29-year-old has constantly chipped in with valuable contributions, playing a role in the success that Los Blancos have had over the past half-a-decade.

Vazquez, till date, has made 240 appearances for Real Madrid, bagging 26 goals and 54 assists. The Spanish international was enjoying a particularly impressive 2020/21 term until an injury sidelined him. Indeed, he proved his worth with his versatility, doing the job at right wing as well as right-back this season, producing a tally of two goals and eight assists from 34 games in all competitions.

However, Vazquez is staring at an uncertain future at Real Madrid as his contract is set to expire once the season is over. Negotiations over a new deal have been held but an agreement is yet to be arrived upon. This has sparked a flurry of interest in the seasoned campaigner, with the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea among his suitors, while Arsenal have also held talks to sign him.

And, it seems like Real Madrid’s neighbours, Atletico Madrid, also tried to capitalise on Vazquez’s situation by making him a contract offer. Los Rojiblancos are in need of reinforcements out wide, with Vitolo staring at an exit from the Wanda Metropolitano in the summer, making the 29-year-old Vazquez a viable target for Diego Simeone’s side.

However, Vazquez has turned down the chance to join Atletico Madrid. The 29-year-old is a loyal Madridista and does not wish to play for the club’s rival,  as per the report. Indeed, it is even stated that the winger could be closing in on a new contract with Zinedine Zidane’s side, with the club improving their offer from €3.5 million-a-year to €5 million per year.

Even if an agreement is not reached, Vazquez would not consider joining Atletico Madrid and would choose to sign for Serie A giants AC Milan, the report adds. So, as things stand, the 29-year-old Real Madrid ace, having turned down the current La Liga leaders, could be set for a new contract at the Santiago Bernabeu itself.
