Arsenal are reportedly stepping up their pursuit of former academy ace and Rangers midfield mainstay Glen Kamara ahead of the upcoming transfer window.

According to a report from Football Insider, Premier League giants Arsenal are intent on re-signing Finnish midfielder Glen Kamara from Scottish champions Rangers in the summer and are ready to hand him a five-year contract to return to the Emirates.

Kamara, 25, moved to England in 2018, joining the Southend United academy. Only a year later, he was snapped up by Arsenal, where he spent five years, making just the solitary first-team appearance while going out on loan stints away at Southend and Colchester United before permanently moving to Scottish outfit Dundee FC in 2017.

Kamara made quite the impression during his time at Dens Park, prompting Rangers to sign him up in the January transfer window of 2019. Ever since, the Finnish midfielder has been a mainstay in the centre of the pitch for the Gers, racking up 104 appearances in which he has chipped in with four goals and five assists.

A defensive midfielder by trade, Kamara has been critical in Rangers winning the Scottish Premiership title this season and was impressive this past weekend as Steven Gerrard’s men put outgoing champions Celtic to the sword in a league encounter.

Kamara’s growth and development since leaving has seemingly caught the eyes of Arsenal, who are now keen on bringing their former academy ace back to the club later this year. The Gunners did strengthen their midfield unit last summer with the signing of Thomas Partey, but the Ghanaian has endured a slow start to life in England due to injuries and fitness problems.

Dani Ceballos, meanwhile, will be returning to Real Madrid with his loan deal coming to an end in a few weeks while Mohamed Elneny is only seen as a squad option. Plus, with Mikel Arteta now seemingly preferring to use Granit Xhaka as a left-back, there is a need for another enforcer in the centre of the park for Arsenal ahead of the next season, making Kamara a viable transfer target.

And, in order to re-sign the Finland international, the north Londoners have informed his camp that the club are willing to hand him a five-year contract even as he is about to start negotiations over a new deal with Rangers.

Kamara’s current contract with the Gers runs till the summer of 2023. The Scottish champions value him at more than £10 million after having signed him for only £50,000 a couple of years ago. It now remains to be seen if the midfielder is tempted to return to the Emirates and make it big at Arsenal or whether he decides to stay put at the Ibrox and continue his journey with Rangers.
