Manchester United are among the clubs interested in the services of Everton forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who could cost around £80 million.

According to Leah Smith, Manchester United have set their sights on Dominic Calvert-Lewin. It appears the Premier League giants have now prioritised the signing of a new striker, as they brace themselves for a future without Edinson Cavani, whose contract at Old Trafford expires at the end of the season.

Manchester United have reportedly made an offer to Everton for their prized attacker, but the Merseyside outfit is persistent on their £80 million valuation of the striker, who has netted 14 goals in the current Premier League campaign, emerging as one of the league’s rising stars.

Although goals have dried up for Calvert-Lewin since the first phase of the campaign, the English international has continued to impress with his work rate, coupled with the physical presence that makes him a useful target man for Everton.

The physical aspect of Calvert-Lewin’s game, in particular, could be an appealing aspect for Manchester United as they do indeed boast an excellent creative unit that can create goalscoring opportunities at will. Unfortunately, they have lacked the services of a target man, with Anthony Martial often being criticised for his lack of consistency.

In Calvert-Lewin, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could find himself a useful number nine who can be used as a target man by the overlapping full-backs, including Luke Shaw. Additionally, he can hold the ball up higher up the pitch, providing lay-offs for dynamic attackers such as Marcus Rashford and perhaps even a new winger, with Manchester United still being heavily linked with a move for Jadon Sancho.

In many ways, the English international could prove to be an ideal replacement for Romelu Lukaku, whose absence has been clearly felt at Old Trafford over the past couple of years. However, an astounding asking fee of £80 million appears to be quite unrealistic on Everton’s part.

Although financial scarcity has not historically been a problem for a club like Manchester United, they are having to work with limited funds in light of the coronavirus pandemic and, therefore, cannot afford to spend big on a single player. Perhaps the only sign of promise for the Red Devils could come in the shape of sales, with stars like Donny van de Beek and David de Gea tipped to leave.

Their potential departures could serve as a considerable financial boost for Manchester United, although it remains unlikely that they would want to splash the cash on Calvert-Lewin, especially when there are excellent cost-effective alternatives, including Andrea Belotti.
