Manchester United have reportedly scouted AFC Wimbledon’s exciting prospect Matthew Cox with a view to sign him up in the summer transfer window.

According to a report from The Telegraph, Manchester United have sent scouts to watch 17-year-old goalkeeper Matthew Cox in action as they look to sign up the teenager from League One side AFC Wimbledon.

Cox came through the ranks at Wimbledon and has been involved with the club’s Under-18 setup, making three appearances in the FA Youth Cup this season in which he managed to secure one clean sheet. The teenager made his debut for the England Under-17 side this past February, following which he penned his first professional deal with the Dons.

In the aftermath of his breakthrough for the England youth team, Cox has attracted quite a bit of interest from the Premier League with several clubs said to have fielded enquiries for the 17-year-old. Among them are Manchester United as well, who have sent scouts to follow the young shot-stopper, who has made it to the first-team bench on a few occasions this season.

The Red Devils have ramped up their youth recruitment over the past year or so. Last summer saw Manchester United sign several promising youngsters such as Willy Kambwala, Charlie McNeill, Alvaro Fernandez, Marc Jurado among many others. Heading into the upcoming transfer window, the 20-time English champions have once again been linked with a lot of prospects with potential.

Sheffield United’s Kyron Gordon has been linked recently, while Manchester United are also set to hand a week-long trial for 16-year-old striker Ethan Laidlaw of Scottish club Hibernian FC.

Goalkeeping department is also something that the Red Devils are looking to bolster having recruited the likes of Nathan Bishop and Radek Vitek recently while they also held an interest in Celtic’s Vincent Angelini, although the club decided to call off the pursuit of the 17-year-old.

Cox, to that end, could be seen as an alternative for him. The Wimbledon man is touted as a bright prospect and Manchester United, as per the report, see him as one for the future and will send him out on loan should they do complete a deal for him. It now remains to be seen if a move materliases at the end of the season.
