Chelsea are reportedly leading the race to sign Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero, who will be a free agent at the end of the ongoing season.

According to a report from Argentine outlet TyC Sports, Chelsea are in pole position to secure the signing of Manchester City superstar Sergio Aguero in the summer transfer window.

Widely regarded as one of the best centre-forwards to have ever played in the Premier League, Aguero arrived on English shores in 2011, signing from Atletico Madrid. In his very first season at the club, the Argentine was responsible for perhaps the most memorable moment in City’s history, scoring the late winner on the final day of the season that led to their first ever Premier League title.

Since then, Aguero has only continued to enhance his reputation as one of the most lethal forwards in the game. However, at 32, the former Atletico Madrid man has had problems with fitness this term. And with Pep Guardiola finding a way for his team to tick without a centre-forward, he has been overlooked quite a bit in the 2020/21 season.

And with Aguero in the final few weeks of his current contract with the Cityzens, the club confirmed that a renewal will not be forthcoming and the veteran will be released. Set to become a free agent now, the 32-year-old has attracted a lot of interest from across Europe with likes of PSG, Barcelona and Chelsea all showing keenness to land him.

As per the aforementioned report, Chelsea have now emerged as the front-runners to land the veteran goalscorer. The Blues have a stockpile of options when it comes to the centre-forward slot with Timo Werner, Tammy Abraham and Olivier Giroud, along with Kai Havertz, who has been extensively used as a No. 9 in recent games.

However, Giroud is out of contract at the end of the season while Abraham has been strongly linked with an exit, with West Ham showing an interest. Throw in the fact that Werner has underwhelmed in his debut season in England, it is understandable as to why Thomas Tuchel & co. would be eyeing a move for Aguero.

The report goes on to mention that Aguero is happy and comfortable in England and isn’t inclined towards moving away. In addition, the 32-year-old wants to be playing at the highest level so that he can make his way into the Argentine squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar and sees the Premier League as his best option to do that.

This gives Chelsea, who are already said to have presented him with an offer, a distinct advantage over the likes of Barcelona and PSG. It now remains to be seen if Aguero does end up swapping the Etihad Stadium for Stamford Bridge next season.
