Chelsea are reportedly weighing up the possibility of signing Jose Maria Gimenez from Atletico Madrid in the summer transfer window.

According to a report by The Athletic, Jose Maria Gimenez is a part of a three-man shortlist that has been drawn up at Chelsea to bolster the heart of their defence in the summer transfer window. The Atletico Madrid defender also has Niklas Sule and Ibrahima Konate for company on this list.

Jose Maria Gimenez joined Atletico Madrid from Danubio in the summer of 2013 and has since made significant progress in his career. However, the 26-year-old has never really been able to nail down his spot in the side over the last eight years, although this season, he has been hampered by a number of injuries.

As a result, so far in 2020/21, the Uruguayan international has managed to appear in just over half of the 37 games that Atletico Madrid have played this season, though he has only missed two games when fit and available. However, Gimenez remains a highly-rated defender, which is why it is not surprising to see the links with Chelsea appear again.

Chelsea appear set to enter the transfer market for a centre-back in the summer transfer window, despite signing Thiago Silva and Malang Sarr only last year. Having said that, the keenness to sign a central defender is not unfounded, seeing as Silva is in the twilight of his career, while Fikayo Tomori could well join AC Milan permanently in the summer.

In addition, Antonio Rudiger faces an uncertain future at Stamford Bridge as well, with his current deal having a little over a year left to run out, while he has also been linked with Juventus. That is why, Chelsea are having to keep their options open ahead of the summer transfer window, with Gimenez part of a three-man shortlist ahead of the summer transfer window.

Apart from Gimenez, Chelsea are also interested in signing Niklas Sule and Ibrahima Konate, and it will be interesting to see who ends up getting prioritised when the transfer window reopens this summer. For now, it looks like the west Londoners are eager to sign a centre-back ahead of next season and it remains to be seen how things develop in the coming months.
