Manchester United are reportedly weighing up a summer move for former Arsenal goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.

According to a report by Football Insider, Emiliano Martinez has popped up on the radar of Manchester United over a move in the summer transfer window. The record 20-time English champions are aiming to overhaul their goalkeeping department in the summer, with the former Arsenal goalkeeper on top of their wishlist.

Martinez spent over a decade at Arsenal after arriving at the club from Indipendiente in 2010. However, it was not until last season that he finally managed to make a mark for the Gunners, having largely been hauled out on loan or been a mere backup option. After revelling in the absence of Bernd Leno, though, the Argentine sought regular game-time, which was not forthcoming at the Emirates.

Hence, the 28-year-old parted ways with Arsenal last summer to join Aston Villa, where he has gone on to establish himself as the first-choice shot-stopper while also growing in stature within the Premier League. Till date, he has made 27 appearances for the Villans, keeping 14 clean sheets. Martinez’s progress has alerted Manchester United, who are in the market for a goalkeeper.

In fact, the Red Devils are set to enter the market for not one but two shot-stoppers, owing to the uncertainty surrounding David de Gea in addition to the non-existent future of Sergio Romero. Romero is certain to leave Manchester United in the summer after being frozen out completely since the return of Dean Henderson from a loan spell with Sheffield United.

As for de Gea, his decade-long association with Manchester United appears to be at an end, with reports claiming that Henderson is set to be elevated to the status of being the first-choice stopper from next season onwards. As a result, the Premier League heavyweights have been linked with a number of goalkeepers in recent weeks.

The likes of Jan Oblak, Gianluigi Donnarumma and Nick Pope have all been named as targets for the summer, with Martinez now emerging on their radar as well. In fact, the report stresses that the former Arsenal goalkeeper is on top of Manchester United’s wishlist, after being impressed with his performances since joining Aston Villa.

What now remains to be seen is if Manchester United end up launching the offensive for Martinez in the summer transfer window and if the ex-Arsenal star is open to such a move despite his history with the Gunners. For now, it looks like Martinez is the latest goalkeeping target for the Red Devils.
