Liverpool have reportedly joined the race to sign Sander Berge from Sheffield United in the summer transfer window.

According to a report by Eurosport, the interest in Sander Berge just continues to increase ahead of the summer transfer window. Liverpool are the latest club to be linked with the 23-year-old Norway international, who could leave Sheffield United post the end of the season.

Berge joined Sheffield United from Genk in January 2020 and took little time to establish himself as a regular in midfield. In the ongoing season, though, the Norwegian has struggled with injuries and is currently sidelined after undoing surgery on his leg.

As a result, the 23-year-old has managed just 13 Premier League appearances this season and it has been suggested that he could be destined to depart Bramall Lane in the summer transfer window, with Sheffield United the favourites to be relegated. Such a development has alerted Liverpool.

The reigning Premier League champions are in the market for a midfielder ahead of the summer transfer window owing to the uncertainty surrounding Georginio Wijnaldum. The Dutchman has taken a further step away from Liverpool lately, with reports claiming that Barcelona have tabled a contract offer for him.

With Wijnaldum expected to exit Anfield in the summer, Liverpool are in desperate need of signing a midfielder, especially with the likes of Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain becoming peripheral figures this season. In addition, James Milner is in the twilight of his career and will need to be replaced soon.

That leaves Jurgen Klopp with captain Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, Thiago Alcantara and Curtis Jones as the only midfielders at his disposal, thereby necessitating the arrival of a midfielder. To that end, a move for Berge makes sense, although the youngster has also been linked with Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur in recent weeks.

The report also mentions that Aston Villa have been tracking Berge and his situation, but with Liverpool now set to join the pursuit to sign him, the transfer saga could take a turn. While a price tag has not been mentioned, the valuation has been labeled as “obtainable” by Eurospot and it will be interesting to see if Liverpool do end up making a move for the 23-year-old come summer.
