Paris Saint-Germain are looking to steal a march in Real Madrid’s pursuit of David Alaba, with the Ligue 1 giants ready to offer a bumper €25 million per season contract.

According to Calciomercato, Paris Saint-Germain have emerged as a late candidate in pursuit of David Alaba. The Bayern Munich defender is set to leave Allianz Arena in the summer and his expiring contract means he will be able for a free transfer, putting a host of European giants on red alert.

Real Madrid are believed to be in pole position in the race to sign Alaba. And while PSG do realise they may not be able to offer the sporting prospect like Los Blancos, they are looking to lure the defender to Paris by offering a bumper contract worth around €25 million per season.

It appears PSG are well aware of Real Madrid’s financial shortcoming, in the aftermath of a pandemic that has brutally hit tourism, matchday revenue and advertising among other things, leaving the Spanish giants crippled in regards to their historic financial prowess.

Although Zinedine Zidane’s men are still among the top contenders to sign next-gen superstars like Erling Haaland, they might not be able to invest too much elsewhere and disrupt the wage structure. As such, meeting PSG’s offer of €25 million per season could be way too much, as far as the Whites are concerned.

Madrid’s pursuit of Alaba could be further hurt by the fact that the player initially opted to leave Bayern purely due to financial reasons. The Austrian international was demanding a certain payraise which the Bavarians were simply unwilling to pay, causing him to end his long-running association with the German outfit.

While PSG might not be much of a sporting attraction when compared to Bayern or Real Madrid, they can certainly offer regular game-time as well as a massive paycheck. In addition, Alaba could potentially reunite with former teammate Juan Bernat, while the central defensive combination of him and Marquinhos is set to prosper under the leadership of Mauricio Pochettino.

Real Madrid, though, still remain the favourites as they can offer Alaba the opportunity to replace the legendary Sergio Ramos. The ageing defender could be on his way out of Bernabeu after struggling to agree to a new contract – paving the way for the Bayern Munich man to quickly establish himself as one of the most crucial assets in one of the biggest teams in European football.
