Real Madrid are reportedly prepared to do a deal with Manchester United for the transfer of Raphael Varane in the summer window.

According to a report from the Manchester Evening News, Manchester United have been handed a boost in their pursuit of Raphael Varane as Real Madrid are ready to sell the French international to the Red Devils in the summer.

During his time at the Spanish capital outfit, Varane has established himself as one of the most decorated modern centre-backs, having won four UEFA Champions League trophies along with three La Liga titles and four FIFA Club World Cups. In addition, he was also an integral member of the French national team that won the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Varane is set to enter the final year of his contract with Real Madrid at the end of the season, with his current deal running out in the summer of 2022. While Los Blancos are willing to offer him a new deal, as part of which he will also be handed the club captaincy, the defender is not happy with the terms offered and is open to an exit.

And, given that he has just a year left on his contract, Real Madrid, too, are now open to doing a deal instead of facing the prospect of losing Varane for nothing twelve months down the line.

Varane has been a long-term transfer target for Manchester United, with the club having tried to sign him before he made the move to Real Madrid from Lens in 2011. United have continued to follow him ever since the Red Devils’ CEO Ed Woodward was willing to splash £100 million for Varane in 2018 but a move did not materialise.

Even though Manchester United and Real Madrid have not worked on any deals since Angel Di Maria made the switch to Old Trafford from Santiago Bernabeu in 2014, the report states that Woodward and Madrid president Florentino Perez share a good relationship which should help the 20-time English champions in their pursuit of Varane.

The 27-year-old fits the profile of players that Manchester United are looking to pair up with club captain Harry Maguire, who has not had consistent partners since his switch to Old Trafford in 2019. Both Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly have blown hot and cold while the latter’s injury problems have made him an unreliable option as well.

With Manchester United also eyeing a move for Borussia Dortmund superstar Erling Haaland in the summer, it will be interesting to see whether they have the necessary funds to swoop away Raphael Varane from Real Madrid as well.

In addition, the fact that arch-rivals Liverpool are also keen on the Frenchman makes things tricky for the Red Devils. It now remains to be seen if Ole Gunnar Solskjaer & co. are able to sign the 27-year-old look elsewhere for defensive reinforcements in the summer.
