Liverpool are ready to rival Manchester United in the pursuit of Fiorentina defender Nikola Milenkovic this summer.

Liverpool’s search for defensive reinforcements have now led them to Fiorentina, with Nikola Milenkovic emerging as the latest target, if reports from FiorentinaNews are to be believed. The Serbian has no shortage of suitors though as he is courted by a bunch of top clubs across Europe including Manchester City and Manchester United, as relayed by TeamTalk.

The Reds, it seems, have now also joined the race as they plot to bolster their defensive options in the summer despite securing the services of Ozan Kabak last month . In addition, Ben Davies joined the club, from Preston North End, adding to Jurgen Klopp’s armoury amid the injury issues surrounding the likes of Fabinho, Joel Matip, Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk.

Highly regarded as one of the most promising young defenders in Serie A, Milenkovic has been one of the bright spots in an otherwise dire campaign for Fiorentina this term. His performances at the heart of the backline have indeed been influential for the club, which has shipped in 35 goals in the league so far.

Standing at 1.95m, Milenkovic’s imposing frame makes him quite an intimidating presence for the opposing attackers. It also makes him almost unbeatable in the air – making him an ideal partner to someone like van Dijk.

The 23-year-old’s experience at the highest level of football also often goes unnoticed as it is worth mentioning that the defender has made over 100 competition appearances for Fiorentina. In addition, he has registered 26 caps for the Serbian national team.

Therefore, Milenkovic is indeed a viable option for Liverpool. His current contract at Fiorentina expires in 2022 and given the financial climate in the aftermath of a global pandemic, it won’t be surprising to see the Italian club settling for a meagre price, especially if they do get relegated.

At the age of 23, the Serbian international could be a smart long-term option for the Reds. But, it remains to be seen whether or not they can compete with the two Manchester clubs, who will also be determined to sign the defender on a cut-price in the summer.

Liverpool do have several alternatives, however, having recently been linked with a move for Aston Villa’s rising star in Ezri Konsa. Either way, it is going to be an exciting summer transfer window for the Merseyside outfit as they attempt to revamp their defensive unit in their bid to once again compete for the title next season.
