Manchester City have reportedly set their sights on former Liverpool striker Danny Ings over a possible move in the summer.

According to a report by The Athletic, Manchester City are set to enter the transfer market for at least one striker in the summer transfer window amid uncertainty surrounding the future of Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus. One of the names considered by the Citizens is former Liverpool strker Danny Ings.

Ings has resurrected his career since first joining Southampton from Liverpool in the summer of 2018. The Englishman was touted for big things at Anfield, but a couple of long-term knee injuries curtailed his progress significantly before the Reds hauled him out on loan to Southampton.

A year later, the Saints signed Ings permanently, with the 28-year-old not looking back since. One of the most prolific players in the Premier League at present, the former Liverpool striker has gone on to establish himself as an elite forward. His progress, though, has alerted a number of top clubs, with Manchester City showing an interest in signing the English international.

The report claims that Manchester City are keeping their options open amid the expiring contract of Sergio Aguero, who could well be on his way out of the Etihad as a free agent in the summer. In addition, Gabriel Jesus’s future at the club is not entirely certain either, with his current deal set to run out in 2023.

As a result, it has been suggested that Manchester City will enter the market for at least one striker in the summer, with Romelu Lukaku featuring high on their wishlist. City, though, are also weighing up a move for Ings, with the ex-Liverpool striker another candidate on their agenda.

It will be interesting to see if Manchester City do end up making a move for Ings, who is reported to be favouring a move to neighbours Manchester United instead. If they do launch the offensive for him, though, the deal could include a player currently on their roster in order to lure Southampton to part ways with the 28-year-old.

For now, Manchester City are flying high in the Premier League, with or without a striker to lead the line in Pep Guardiola’s side. It will, however, be interesting to see if former Liverpool star Ings ends up making his way to the Etihad come summer.
