Liverpool have reportedly contacted SC Braga over the possibility of signing David Carmo, who is being viewed as an alternative to Ozan Kabak.

According to reputed Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool are keeping their options open in case they are unable to land Ozan Kabak in time before the winter transfer window deadline. The Premier League champions have approached SC Braga over the prospect of signing David Carmo.

Liverpool have been one of the busiest clubs on deadline day in the ongoing window, as they scramble to secure the services of a centre-back before the market closes down for business. It has been suggested that they have already agreed a deal to sign Ben Davies from Preston North End.

In addition, Liverpool are also eager to sign a second centre-back to alleviate their defensive crisis once and for all. To that end, the Reds are reportedly chasing Ozan Kabak over a late loan move. However, a contingency plan has been put in place in case they are unable to secure the services of the Turkish international.

As a result, David Carmo has now emerged as a Plan B for Liverpool, who have even contacted SC Braga over a possible last-gasp transfer. Fabrizio Romano has also added that Carmo is a serious option for Liverpool, even though they have already agreed personal terms with Kabak.

Carmo has come up leaps and bounds since enjoying a breakthrough 2019/20 campaign with Braga and has since gone on to become a mainstay in their defence. Till date this season, the 21-year-old has missed just two league games when available and his growing importance for the Portuguese outfit has alerted a number of top clubs, Liverpool being one of them.

By now, it has become clear why Liverpool are so desperate to get not one but two centre-backs on board at Anfield. With Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez sidelined with long-term injuries, Jurgen Klopp’s options in defence were already wearing thin. His predicament worsened last week when both Fabinho and Joel Matip picked up their own injuries as well.

To rid themselves of a brewing central defensive crisis and free up Jordan Henderson to reprise his usual role in midfield, bolstering the heart of their defence became imperative. With Ben Davies already set to arrive at Liverpool, it will now be interesting to identify the second centre-back that they sign. Will it be Kabak or will the Reds turn their attention towards Carmo? It will all be clear soon.
