Manchester United have reportedly been offered the chance to sign former Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko who has fallen out of favour at AS Roma.

According to a report from Italian publication Corriere dello Sport, as relayed by The Sun, Manchester United have been offered the chance to sign AS Roma captain Edin Dzeko after the towering striker had a falling out with manager Paulo Fonseca.

The 34-year-old has been with the Giallorossi since the summer of 2015, when he brought an end to his four-year association with United’s local rivals Manchester City. Since moving to the Italian capital club, Dzeko has been one of the most consistent performers in the Serie A and has grown into Roma’s most important player.

Elevated to the club captain status, Dzeko, so far, has racked up a tally of 114 goals and 52 assists from 242 appearances, with eight of those goals coming in the 2020/21 campaign. However, the Bosnian is set to be sold by Roma before the January transfer window closes after he fell out with Fonseca.

It is believed that the pair had a clash of heads over the firing of a backroom staff member, Gianluca Gombar, last week. Following this, Dzeko was left out of Roma’s squad for the Serie A game against Spezia last weekend and is now said to be training by himself as he closes in on an exit.

And, as per the report, Manchester United have been offered a chance to take the veteran striker off the Giallorossi’s hands. The Red Devils brought in Edinson Cavani to bolster their centre-forward options in the summer with Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood already available to the manager.

However, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has largely used Rashford and Greenwood on the flanks while Martial has been largely ineffective this term. In addition, Odion Ighalo’s loan spell at Old Trafford came to an end earlier this week. So, Manchester United could do with another option at the top to provide cover and competition.

However, any move for Dzeko could be unlikely given his history with Manchester City for whom he made 189 appearances, scoring 72 goals. Furthermore, the report states that Roma are considering the possibility of using the Bosnian in a swap deal to sign former Manchester United star Alexis Sanchez from Inter Milan.

Dzeko has popped on the radars of Real Madrid and Barcelona as well. As things stand, it seems quite clear that the 34-year-old will be on his way out of Stadio Olimpico before the January transfer window slams shut. In fact, Roma have already identified Chelsea’s Olivier Giroud as a replacement. However, it remains to be seen if Manchester United act on the chance of signing the Bosnian.
