Liverpool are reportedly set to battle it out with local rivals Everton for the signing of 18-year-old Sheffield United defender Kyron Gordon.

According to a report from the Daily Mail, reigning Premier League champions Liverpool will go head-to-head against Merseyside rivals Everton in the race to sign Sheffield United youngster Kyron Gordon.

Gordon came through the youth ranks at Sheffield United and signed his first professional contract with the club back in 2019, putting pen on paper over a two-year contract. The centre-back has featured four times for the club’s Under-18 side till date, with all his appearances coming in the FA Youth Cup.

Gordon has been training with the senior team a fair bit since the pre-season last year and has been on the fringes of Chris Wilder’s squad. However, is yet to make his first-team debut for the Blades, although he did make the bench for the FA Cup game against Bristol Rovers earlier this month.

Despite not making his debut, Gordon seems to have made a strong impression on Wilder. “I wanted to bring Kyron, because he’s been involved with the first team a fair bit since pre-season, he’s done well and I thought we might have needed the type of qualities he brings,” the Blades boss said after the win against Bristol Rovers.

While he may be yet to make a senior appearance, Gordon has seemingly registered on the radars of reigning English champions, Liverpool. The Reds have had problems at the heart of the defence this term due to injuries and could look for a quality centre-back to make an impact before the January window closes or in the summer.

Gordon, however, will be someone that Liverpool would be looking at as a long-term prospect. The Reds have been recruiting aggressively to bolster their youth ranks in recent times. The Merseyside giants recently secured the signing of Callum Scanlon, Stefan Bajcetic and are closing in on the capture of Kaide Gordon from Derby County.

Having seen the development of the likes of Rhys Williams, Billy Koumetio, Sepp van den Berg in the youth teams, it is only natural for them to look at add more talented defenders, like Kyron Gordon, to nurture them for the future.

However, Liverpool are set to face competition from neighbours Everton, who are also said to be keen on signing the 18-year-old. The Toffees themselves have suffered from a lack of depth in the centre-back department in recent times. It remains to be seen if the Reds are able to beat their local rivals for the signing of the promising teenager in the coming weeks.
