Chelsea defender Marcos Alonso is reportedly being viewed as a shock option to replace Junior Firpo at Barcelona this month.

As reported by Milan News, Marcos Alonso has popped up on the radar of Barcelona over a shock move before the end of the ongoing transfer window. The Chelsea outcast is being viewed as a possible replacement option for Junior Firpo, who is a target for AC Milan.

Alonso has gone through a roller-coaster of a spell since joining Chelsea from Fiorentina in the summer of 2016. There have been times when the Spanish international has been a pivotal figure for the Blues, but his stock has constantly been on the decline since Frank Lampard took charge at Stamford Bridge.

The 30-year-old has reached his lowest point at Chelsea this term, having been completely shunned following the arrival of Ben Chilwell. Alonso has indeed turned out just three times for Chelsea so far in the 2020/21 season and it has long been suggested that he will be allowed to leave the club in the ongoing transfer window. And, Barcelona could well be his next destination.

Barcelona have reportedly been bracing themselves for the departure of Junior Firpo, who has been heavily linked with a move to AC Milan. While it was suggested that the Blaugrana could keep hold of the young Spaniard till the end of the season before moving him on in the summer, it has seemed as if a January exit could be on the cards.

In order to replace him, Barcelona have been linked with a number of left-backs, who would not just fill in the spot being vacated but also possibly be a long-term successor for Jordi Alba. To that end the likes of Angelino, Jose Gaya and Juan Bernat have all been linked with Barcelona, albeit for a summer move.

Now, though, Barcelona seem to have identified the ideal candidate to be the immediate option to come in if Firpo joins AC Milan, with Alonso now on their radar. The Chelsea outcast has even been touted to be a target for Atletico Madrid, but those rumours have dissipated away in recent weeks.

In order to swoop Alonso away from Chelsea, though, Barcelona must first sell Firpo, a prospect which is not set in stone, as per the reliable Fabrizio Romano. What now remains to be seen is the Catalan giants do end up offloading the 24-year-old, and if Alonso then arrives from Chelsea at Camp Nou.
