AC Milan have contacted Premier League giants Chelsea over the possibility of signing defender Fikayo Tomori in the ongoing transfer window.

According to reliable journalist and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea centre-back Fikayo Tomori has emerged as a potential target for Serie A leaders AC Milan.

The 23-year-old is a product of the Chelsea youth academy. However, he had to wait till last season to break into the first-team, following loan spells away at Brighton & Hove Albion, Hull City and Derby County, with the last one coming during Frank Lampard’s time as the Rams’ manager.

Having impressed Lampard at Pride Park, Tomori enjoyed his backing in the early parts of the 2019/20 season. However, the defender’s game-time has been on the decline since the second half of the last campaign. The ongoing term has seen the England international feature just three times across all competitions.

Tomori finds himself behind Kurt Zouma, Thiago Silva, Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen in the pecking order under Lampard at Stamford Bridge currently. Having grown frustrated with the lack of regular minutes, the defender is said to be pushing for an exit in the ongoing transfer window.

Recent reports had claimed that Chelsea were not planning on sanctioning a move for Tomori this month, following an injury to Christensen. However, Lampard recently hinted that the 23-year-old could be allowed to leave the club on loan for the rest of the season.

Alerted by the development, AC Milan have made contact with the west London outfit over the possibility of signing Tomori this month. Romano’s update does not provide an indication as to whether the Rossoneri want to sign him on loan or in a permanent deal. However, he does insist that the England international would be open to a move.

But, Romano has also mentioned that the Serie A heavyweights will only move for Tomori if their approach for RC Strasbourg defender Mohamed Simakan falls through. The Frenchman, who interestingly has also been linked with Chelsea, has been on AC Milan’s radar since the summer.

Tomori signed a new contract with Chelsea in December 2019 that runs till the summer of 2024. Despite his lack of game-time, the England centre-back continues to be held in high regard within the club. So, a permanent transfer does seem unlikely, but as things stand, the 23-year-old is poised for a loan exit. Whether it is to AC Milan, though, remains to be seen.
