Manchester City are reportedly keeping a keen eye on the developments surrounding Sergio Ramos’s contract situation at Real Madrid.

According to a report by ESPN, Manchester City are closely monitoring the contract situation of Sergio Ramos at Real Madrid. The Spanish international has entered the final months of his current deal with Los Blancos and is free to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs.

Sergio Ramos joined Real Madrid from Sevilla in the summer of 2015 and over the past decade and a half, he has gone on to enjoy a stunningly illustrious stint with the Spanish heavyweights. Having won every single honour he has contested for at club level multiple times over, it is fair to say that he is one of the most successful players ever to have graced the game.

Since joining Real Madrid, Ramos has made 666 appearances across all competitions, and has also chipped in with an astonishing 100 goals and 40 assists. However, his future has been mired in a lot of uncertainty in the last few months, seeing as the veteran defender is in now in the final six months of his deal with Real Madrid. This has piqued the interest of Manchester City.

The Premier League heavyweights signed two centre-backs in the summer transfer window, with Ruben Dias, in particular, making a solid impact at the back. With John Stones enjoying a fine resurgent run this term and Aymeric Laporte still being regarded as one of the best in the Premier League, it is surprising that Manchester City would still want another central defender.

Having said that, the report suggests that Pep Guardiola is a huge admirer of Ramos and reckons that the Real Madrid captain would be an “interesting” option to provide leadership and experience at the back. Despite being 35, there is a belief at Manchester City that Ramos could be a solid short-term option for them.

Apart from Manchester City, the likes of PSG and Premier League rivals Tottenham have also been linked with Ramos and with a renewal still not penned, suitors might start lining up. ESPN, though, have claimed that Ramos would prefer staying put at Real Madrid, who have agreed to the length of the new contract have still not reached an agreement over the wages.

While Real Madrid, on their part, have eyed Pau Torres as a possible replacement option, they, too, would favour tying their captain down to a new deal. However, with Ramos now free to negotiate with foreign clubs over a pre-contract agreement, the Merengues ought to agree a renewal sooner rather than later, especially with Manchester City now in the hunt to sign the 35-year-old.
