Contrary to speculations, David Alaba’s supposed move to Real Madrid has hit a snag over the Bayern Munich star’s lofty wage demands.

According to a report from Goal.com, Real Madrid’s attempts to land Bayern Munich contract rebel David Alaba have hit a roadblock over the versatile defender’s wage demands.

By this time it is very clear that Alaba is set to leave Bayern Munich when his contract expires at the end of the season, after having rejected a new deal from the Bavarian giants. A host of clubs across Europe have registered an interest in the Austrian international’s services, but Real Madrid are believed to be the front-runners to land him.

The Merengues will be in need of freshening things up in the defensive department in the summer as club captain and icon Sergio Ramos enters the final phase of his professional career and is also in the last few months of his contract. Furthermore, Marcelo has also regressed over the past year or so, and will soon need to be phased out of the first-team.

So, signing someone like Alaba, who can play at both centre-back as well as left-back, on a free transfer would be quite the coup for Real Madrid. And, it seemed that a transfer was all but worked out between the two parties.

In fact, footballer-turned-columnist Jan Aage Fjortoft stated on Monday that Alaba’s move to the Spanish capital outfit was as good as a ‘done deal’. However, it seems like things are not as advanced as they are being reported, with the 28-year-old’s salary demands proving to be a major stumbling block.

As per the aforementioned report, Alaba is interested in securing a transfer to Spain and Real Madrid, too, are keen to push through a deal. However, the La Liga champions have been told that they will need to put together a salary package worth a mammoth €13 million per season after tax.

Those wages are more than what Los Blancos are currently paying Sergio Ramos, with the centre-back reported to be on a pay packet worth €12 million a season. With Ramos himself in the final six months of his contract and trying to negotiate a new deal, meeting Alaba’s demands could prove to be problematic for Real Madrid.

It is, however, claimed that Real Madrid are willing to put forth a package of €10 million-a-year in order to secure Alaba’s services. It now remains to be seen if the Bayern Munich star lowers his demands or whether Los Blancos yield, given that there is no shortage of suitors for the Austrian defender.
