Liverpool have reportedly set their sights on Eder Militao over a move in the January transfer window, with Real Madrid reluctant to sell him as of now.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Todo Fichajes, Eder Militao is the subject of interest from Liverpool over a possible move in the January transfer window. Real Madrid, though, are hesitant to offload the Brazilian centre-back this winter, unless they are able to land David Alaba.

Eder Militao arrived at Real Madrid from FC Porto in the summer of 2019. Highly regarded at the time, the 22-year-old did produce some promising performance in his maiden campaign with Los Blancos, turning out 20 times across all competitions.

However, the Brazilian defender has gone tumbling down the pecking order for centre-backs this term, managing to start just a couple of games across all competitions. His situation has now piqued the interest of Premier League champions Liverpool, who are pondering a possible winter acquisition of the player.

That Liverpool could be entering the transfer market for a centre-back in the January transfer window has been mooted for a long time now. With Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez expected to miss the remainder of the season, it is not hard to see why the Reds are looking to bolster the heart of their defence this winter, despite Fabinho’s brilliant impact as a makeshift central defender.

That is because Joel Matip has had his own run-ins with fitness issues in the past year. Beyond Matip and Fabinho, Jurgen Klopp has youngsters like Rhys Williams and Nat Phillips at his disposal and it is clear why signing a centre-back would go a long way for Liverpool to achieve their objectives for the season.

To that end, Lille defender Sven Botman has been touted to be on their radar, among other centre-backs, with Real Madrid outcast Eder Militao now emerging on their radar. However, while the 22-year-old might be deemed to be surplus to requirements at Real Madrid, Zinedine Zidane is reluctant to sanction a January sale.

With Raphael Varane, Sergio Ramos and Nacho the only other centre-backs available to the Real Madrid boss, his hesitance is understandable. Having said that, Zidane’s mind could be turned towards selling Militao to Liverpool if Real Madrid manage to sign David Alaba in January.

The Bayern Munich defender has been rumoured to be on the exit trail at Bayern Munich, with certain reports suggesting that Real Madrid are the favourites to sign him. An intriguing transfer saga now seems to be setting up and it remains to be seen if Liverpool are able to sign Eder Militao come January.
