Jose Mourinho has reportedly reached out to Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric over the possibility of sealing a shock return to Tottenham next summer.

As reported by Spanish outlet OK Diario, Eduardo Inda has revealed while on Spanish television channel El Chiringuito that Luka Modric is the subject of interest from Tottenham over a possible move in next summer’s transfer window. Jose Mourinho has personally contacted the Croat over a switch from Real Madrid.

Modric joined Real Madrid from Tottenham in the summer of 2012 and has since gone on to enjoy a legendary stint with Los Blancos, winning every trophy imaginable multiple times. In this period, he has also won the coveted Ballon d’Or and is regarded as one of the very best midfielders to have ever graced the game.

Now 35, Modric is still going strong at Real Madrid, where he remains a mainstay in midfield, having amassed over 350 appearances for the Spanish heavyweights. However, while his stock is as high as ever, Modric’s future at Real Madrid is uncertain, owing to the fact that he is in the final year of his current deal with the club. And, Tottenham are looking to pounce.

At Tottenham, Jose Mourinho seems to have instilled the squad with the belief of being Premier League contenders once again, with Spurs currently within touching distance of the summit. Having said that, the north Londoners could still do with some injection of creativity from midfield, with the current options helping more in the form of adding steel in the middle of the park.

Tottenham, though, have still largely been linked with a like-for-like addition, with Franck Kessie being named as a recent target amid the uncertain future of Harry Winks. Modric, though, would be a fine short-term solution in the middle of the park, with the Real Madrid superstar potentially providing a huge creative boost from midfield.

To that end, Mourinho has personally been in touch with the veteran midfielder, who has also been courted by Inter Miami over the prospect of a switch to the MLS. The Tottenham boss, who signed Modric while he was at Real Madrid, wishes to secure the services of the Croat next summer in a free transfer.

Modric, though, would prefer renewing terms with Real Madrid, who are in favour of offering a new deal to him, as per reports. At the same time, though, the 35-year-old remains attentive to the possible offer from former club Tottenham, in case a renewal does not become a reality. For now, though, it seems like Mourinho is eager to secure the services of Modric next summer.
