Manchester United have set their sights on West Ham United midfielder Declan Rice as they look to reinforce their squad in January.

According to Manchester Evening News, Manchester United are prepared to go all out in the transfer market in an attempt to bolster their squad. They have already identified a host of potential targets, including West Ham midfielder Declan Rice, who is highly rated by manager Ole-Gunnar Solskjaer.

It is believed that the Red Devils have prioritised the signing of a new holding midfielder as they prepare for life without the ageing Nemanja Matic. Rice, as a result, has emerged as an option, although the Englishman is no stranger to interest from big Premier League clubs, having also been linked with a move to Chelsea this season.

The 21-year-old, who is regarded as one of the best holding midfielders in England has enjoyed a lot of success at West Ham despite the club’s fair share of mediocrity. He has also notched up ten caps for the English national team since making his debut last summer so it appears only a matter of time before he seals a move to a big club.

At Manchester United, Rice could be an ideal long-term replacement for Matic. His ability to sense danger, clear loose balls and an ability to read the game would make him the club’s ideal answer to Tottenham Hotspur’s Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Chelsea’s N’Golo Kante or Liverpool’s Jordan Henderson.

The youngster could also potentially create a formidable midfield partnership alongside the consistent Fred. It could provide further balance to a Man United midfield that boast the services of the industrious Bruno Fernandes in the number ten role.

It is, however, reasonable to believe that the West Ham star could cost a fortune given his age as well as his contract that doesn’t expire until 2024. His potential move to Old Trafford, especially in January, could thus hinge on the future of Paul Pogba.

The Frenchman has been linked with a move away from the club following a lack of game-time under Solskjaer. His potential departure could surely help United earn a fortune, ultimately helping them fund a move for West Ham star, though the Red Devils should also be aware of the competition from their league rivals like Chelsea.
