Real Madrid are reportedly looking to activate the buyback clause to re-sign Sergio Reguilon from Tottenham Hotspur next summer.

As reported by talkSPORT, Real Madrid want to bring Sergio Reguilon back to the Bernabeu just three months after selling him to Tottenham Hotspur. The Spanish heavyweights are planning to activate the buyback clause in the Spaniard’s deal with Spurs, which would see them shell out €45 million for his services next summer.

Sergio Reguilon first came under the spotlight in the 2018/19 season when he became a regular for both Julen Lopetegui and Santiago Solari. In fact, in a dreadful campaign, Reguilon was one of the rare shining lights for Real Madrid. However, things changed upon the return of Zinedine Zidane, who quickly sanctioned a loan move to Sevilla for him last year.

After impressing on-loan at Sevilla, Reguilon’s stock skyrocketed and he was chased by Premier League duo Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur in the summer transfer window before the latter swooped him away from Real Madrid. At Tottenham, Reguilon has taken little time to become the first-choice left-back.

So far, the 23-year-old has turned out 12 times for the Premier League heavyweights, providing 3 assists in those outings. In fact, so impressive has Reguilon been at Tottenham that Real Madrid now want to re-sign him in next summer’s transfer window.

The interest from Real Madrid makes a great deal of sense considering Marcelo is a shell of an all-conquering left-back he once was. The Brazilian international is now a mere backup option and his constant struggles this term have left Zidane unconvinced, which is why he is eager to sign a left-back next summer as competition to Ferland Mendy.

David Alaba has been heavily linked with Real Madrid lately, but Los Blancos face stiff competition in pursuit of the Bayern Munich superstar from a number of other top clubs. With Reguilon, they will face no such issues, considering they can simply activate the €45 million buyback clause in his Tottenham deal.

The report does suggest that Real Madrid are ready to part ways with Marcelo to make room for the return of Reguilon and with the player himself refusing to rule out a return to the Bernabeu, things could fall in place perfectly for the Merengues. What now remains to be seen is if Real Madrid do end up making a move to re-sign Reguilon next summer.

Doesn’t matter if Sergio doesn’t agree to move. The clause can only be fully completed if he agrees to move. If he doesn’t it’s Real Madrid’s loss
