Manchester United have reportedly set their sights on Real Madrid star Lucas Vazquez ahead of the upcoming January transfer window.

According to reports in England, as relayed by Defensa Central, Lucas Vazquez has emerged as a target for Manchester United in the upcoming January transfer window. It appears Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keen on signing the Real Madrid star as part of his defensive reinforcement next month, with the Red Devils particularly lacking a reliable alternative for Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

Primarily a winger, Vazquez has slotted in at right-back on numerous occasions this season in the injury-enforced absence of Dani Carvajal and Alvaro Odriozola, making a solid impression in the makeshift position.

Now, Manchester United are willing to table an offer of €15 million for the Spaniard, whose current contract at Santiago Bernabeu expires at the end of the ongoing campaign. It essentially means that the player could be available for cut-price in January or even for free next summer, although the English giants are unlikely to wait that long.

Unfortunately for Vazquez, his potential move to Old Trafford could hinge on a lot of factors, including the future of Solskjaer himself as the Norwegian has come under pressure following yet another underwhelming start to the Premier League campaign.

It was followed by a disappointing showing in the UEFA Champions League, notably getting eliminated from the tournament after a 3-2 defeat to RB Leipzig on Tuesday. It doesn’t bode well for Solskjaer, who has enjoyed the backing of the board so far. But it appears the club’s patience could soon run out.

It is also fair to point out that Vazquez could face serious competition at Manchester United next season when Diogo Dalot returns to Old Trafford. The young Portuguese is enjoying a stellar campaign on loan to AC Milan so far and there’s every chance that he could become a first-team star at United next season, especially with Solskjaer likely to be sacked.

On the flip side, however, the Red Devils do need an imminent alternative for Wan-Bissaka, who is having to feature in almost every game in this hectic campaign. A potential injury could cause the club a series of troubles, thus making Vazquez a viable target for the club, given that he has impressed playing at right-back this term.

The Spanish international’s versatile nature bodes well for a United team desperate to sign a new winger at the moment. A move for Vazquez could thus make sense, at least in the short-term.
