Manchester United are reportedly preparing a bumper new contract for star man Bruno Fernandes, which would see him double his current wages.

According to an exclusive report from the Mirror, Manchester United are readying a new contract offer for talismanic midfielder Bruno Fernandes amid interest from Real Madrid and Barcelona.

The 26-year-old joined Manchester United in January earlier this year in a £47 million deal and has by far been their best player since. Fernandes played an integral role in the Red Devils’ third-place finish and the semi-final run in the UEFA Europa League last season and has continued in a similar vein of form in the 2020/21 campaign.

Till date, the Portuguese international has featured 38 times for Manchester United, contributing with 22 goals and 14 assists – almost averaging a goal contribution every game. 10 of his 22 goals for the club have come in the ongoing season, as he continues to set the Premier League alight with brilliant attacking performances week after week.

Naturally, his exploits at Old Trafford have drawn admiring glances from La Liga heavyweights Barcelona and Real Madrid. Both the clubs have made indifferent starts to the new season and, having had fairly quiet summer windows, will come out all guns blazing next year in order to bolster their squads.

Real Madrid will be in need of a new midfielder sooner rather than later as creative lynchpin Luka Modric enters the twilight of his career. Barcelona, too, could do with someone like Fernandes, who can score and create in equal measure from midfield, in order to ease some pressure off of Lionel Messi, who could even be departing Camp Nou next summer.

Manchester United, though, are already taking steps to ensure that the 26-year-old’s future at the club is secure. To that end, the 20-time English champions are preparing a new bumper contract offer for Fernandes, which could see him double his current wages.

Fernandes inked a four-and-a-half-year contract worth £100,000-a-week upon his arrival at Manchester United, with the club retaining the option of extending it by another year. But just eleven months into his stay, the Portuguese playmaker could be set for an improved deal, which would see him take home a pay packet of £200,000 per week.

The Porto-born midfielder has made an impact with not only his performances but also with the leadership presence that he has brought on and off the field. And, Manchester United are keen to hand him a contract that reflects his importance and status within the squad while also warding off both Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Fernandes has arguably been the best player in the Premier League since his arrival last January. And a new and improved contract would be a just reward for his scintillating performances, the latest of which came in the 3-1 win against West Ham United.
